One of the most common grant questions is also the hardest to answer in the abstract: how much should you ask for? The honest answer depends on the funder's size and type, but there are useful ranges that can guide a realistic first request.
Community and family foundations
Local community and family foundations frequently award $1,000 to $25,000, with many small grants landing between $2,500 and $10,000. These are often the best starting point for a young nonprofit because the applications are simpler and the competition is more local.
Regional and national foundations
Mid-sized regional and national foundations commonly grant $25,000 to $100,000, and larger private foundations can reach $250,000 or more for a multi-year program. The larger the award, the longer the review and the higher the expectations for evaluation and reporting.
Federal grants
Federal awards run a very wide range and are typically the largest — but also the most competitive and the slowest. Many are designed for substantial programs and carry heavy compliance and reporting requirements that a very small organization may struggle to support.
How to size your request
- Check the funder's recent grants, often on their Form 990.
- Request within their typical range, not above it.
- A first request in the middle or lower half of the range is safest.
- Match the amount to a concrete, budgeted program — not a wish.
- Smaller, fundable wins build a track record for bigger ones later.
